Horsing Around and Around

These socks feature a repeating pixel art animation of Eadweard Muybridge’s motion picture photography.

Considered as history’s first film, Muybridge’s “The Horse In Motion“ captured individual snapshots of a racing horse and proved all 4 hooves left the ground while it galloped. He was the first person to photograph movement in such a way and laid the groundwork for contemporary film through his innovations.

Fascinated by Sam Meech’s Muybridge-inspired knitted animation, string&&loop reached out to Sam with the idea to remix his work together as a sock. Using the realtime video manipulation program Isadora, Sam converted Muybridge’s photographs into a knittable 15 frame sequence that repeats across the sock pattern. The final result can be followed row by row like a wearable storyboard and is available in 3 colors.

Socks made from domestically sourced combed cotton (75%), nylon (23%), and spandex (2%). Read the about page to learn more. Machine wash with like colors.
